Use a polishing cloth to gently wipe this item clean, then you can storage it in a zip plastic bag which would limit exposure to air and within that perhaps require less maintenance.  Amethyst can be safely cleaned with warm, soapy water or with ultrasonic. Steam cleaning is not suggested, as Amethyst should not be exposed to high heat. To prolong the life of the stone, try to avoid longer exposure to the sun (beach, suntanning etc).
