My mother is a fighter.

Words pop like pins from her mouth,

Her pride a pendant against her chest

As she stands before the court,

Arguing for the downtrodden.

Her words are blades

In a battered battlefield,

Slashing through ignorance and

Injustice until she remains

Victorious.

My mother doesn’t lose.

She is sterling silver, Strong

Durable and Beautiful all at once.

She did not lose against

The bullies in primary school

Or the nuns in high school.

She has not lost in twenty years of

Crazy clients and stubborn parents.

She definitely hasn’t lost to me

And my sister, when we dared to challenge her

Even though she was right, because

Like a diamond,

She never breaks.

But my mother also cares oh-so much.

It is felt in every palm

Smoothing back my hair,

Every comforting word,

A warm blanket wrapping around me.

I hear it in every unexpected public-speaking lesson

Teaching me to argue quick as silver.

But most of all, I feel the love in

Every plea to fight for myself:

Every single call to action

She encourages me to heed.

My mother’s a fighter, that’s clear to see.

But she is so much more than that to me.
